Weekly Recap: Newport Beach Film Festival, Free Fire & More!

Image
Well here we are, a weekend before the summer movie season hits and things always stay interesting. I've provided several reviews from The Newport Beach Film Festival and a review for last week's release, Free Fire , but nothing yet for the few new releases that arrived. That said, while I've heard lots of bad about The Circle , I am looking forward to catching Sleight  the first chance I get. Additionally, be sure to check out the La La Land  Blu-ray review I have here, along with our great new podcast episodes. Enjoy! Out Now Bonus: April 2017 Hodgepodge 2: Newport Rises

Image
This week’s Out Now with Aaron and Abe steps back into Pandora briefly for a shootout. If that’s once again too confusing try this on: Aaron and Abe have another free-for-all episode, where the guys discuss new TV, Avatar sequels , Free Fire and The Newport Beach Film Festival .  Among topics covered, we cover some Out Now Quickies™ ( 5:45 ), go into thoughts on the upcoming Avatar sequels ( 12:36 ), film discussion of Free Fire ( 25:35 ), and talk of The Newport Beach Film Festival ( 49:26 ). We then wrap things up ( 1:00:44 ), ending on some bloopers ( 1:09:07 ), following this week’s close out song. So now, if you’ve got an hour or so to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE

Weekly Recap: Newport Beach Film Fest, Lost City of Z & More

Image
This week offered up a mixed set of new releases, but my larger concern is for the 18th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival , which I will be covering for the next week. That said, I will be catching up on Free Fire  when I get the chance and will add a review to go with it. The Promise   is actually interesting as well, though I'm hearing it's a better film to talk about than to actually see. Still, given the topic that is not often covered in films (Armenian genocide) and the independent nature of the film, I do want to see what it has to offer at some point. Other than that, there are a couple new home releases I have reviews for and another really fun podcast. Enjoy! In Theaters Now: NBFF: Take Every Wave -  http://whysoblu.com/nbff-2017-review-take-every-wave-life-laird-hamilton/ The Lost City of Z -  http://whysoblu.com/lost-cit y-z-movie-review/ (A solid biographical adventure story - spreading wider this week) Free Fire - Seeing it soo...

Out Now Commentary: The Running Man (1987)

Image
This month’s Out Now with Aaron and Abe commentary track is a game nobody survives, but Schwarzenegger has yet to play. Aaron and Abe are joined by guests Jim Dietz and Brandon Peters to go over the sci-fi action/satire The Running Man , starring the Austrian Oak himself. The group goes into what makes this Paul Michael Glaser film an interesting 80s touchstone with plenty in common with modern times. Be prepared for lots of fun facts about the film, stories surrounding the search for a director, Sven-Ole Thorsen sightings and the general fun and tangents you expect when it comes to these episodes. Get ready to play; as this is no rerun, this is the podcast covering the murderous game show that took a nation by storm. Important Note:   This commentary may feature both juvenile uses of language and jokes that may be considered un-PC.  We of course are just trying to have a fun time… So now, if you’ve got an hour to kill…

Out Now 281: The Fate of the Furious

Image
This week’s Out Now with Aaron and Abe is about more than just being fast. Abe and Aaron are joined by Brandon Peters and Jose Cordova to talk The F8te of the Furious , the 8 th entry in the blockbuster action franchise, headlined by Vin Diesel . The group goes into just how well this entry stacks up with the competition and more. Among topics covered, we have a fun round of Know Everybody ( 9:27 ), some Out Now Quickies™ ( 13:57 ), Trailer Talk for Star Wars: The Last Jedi ( 37:50 ), the main review ( 46:27 ), Out Now Feedback ( 1:24:22 ) and Games ( 1:38:17 ). We then wrap things up ( 1:47:30 ) and have some bloopers ( 1:59:51 ), following this week’s close out song.  So now, if you’ve got an hour or so to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE

How About That Trailer? - Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Image
There's only so much to say, as it is just exciting to get a new Star Wars trailer, but thanks to Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, the big reveal has finally come. This December sees the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi , Episode VIII, which is written and directed by Rian Johnson and starring everyone you'd expect, plus some fresh blood. Go watch that and then come back.

Weekly Recap: F8te Of The Furious, Lost City Of Z & More!

Image
Get your engines ready, as it's time for another round with Vin Diesel and the gang. The F8te of the Furious is the latest entry in the ongoing franchise and it delivers on the silly fun you'd expect, even if it is a come down from the previous film. In limited release, The Lost City of Z also opens this weekend and is certainly one to look out for. Lots of new home releases this week, which includes some Oscar nominees along with another Criterion Collection review, which I was happy to put together. Last, but not least, enjoy this week's really entertaining podcast. In Theaters Now: The F8te of the Furious -  http://whysoblu.com/no-f8te- make-furious-movie-review/ (The family is back) The Lost City of Z -  http://whysoblu.com/lost-cit y-z-movie-review/ (A solid biographical adventure story) Colossal -  http://whysoblu.com/colossal -movie-review/ (Well worth it and now in more theaters) Here's The Archive Of Every Review Throughout Th...

This week’s Out Now with Aaron and Abe digs into some gifted discoveries, which may just be colossal. Weekly Recap: Gifted, Colossal & More!

Image
Given a lack of desire on my part to take in Smurfs or Going in Style , my recap is limited to films only in limited release. That in mind, Gifted and Colossal are certainly films I'm happy to recommend. One plays it fairly safe, while the other is a strange mash-up of genres, but they do their jobs in the entertainment department. Additionally, some solid home releases this week along with a great podcast available to listen to. Enjoy! In Theaters Now: Gifted -  http://whysoblu.com/gifted-movie-review/ (It's charming enough) Colossal -  http://whysoblu.com/colossal-movie-review/ Here's The Archive Of Every Review Throughout The Year(s) -  http://www.thecodeiszeek.com /p/review-archive.html

Out Now 280: Ghost In The Shell

Image
This week’s Out Now with Aaron and Abe is taking a look at who we all really are inside of our shells. Abe and Aaron are joined by Ali Mattu to discuss Ghost in the Shell , a live-action adaptation of the popular manga/anime series, which has been given some extra attention for a variety of controversial reasons. The group digs into all of that and more this week. Among topics covered, we have a fun round of Know Everybody ( 7:30 ), some Out Now Quickies™ ( 16:26 ), Trailer Talk for It ( 28:45 ), the main review ( 43:41 ), Out Now Feedback ( 1:22:21 ) and Games ( 1:32:40 ). We then wrap things up ( 1:42:41 ) and have some bloopers ( 1:52:40 ), following this week’s close out song.  So now, if you’ve got an hour or so to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE
