How About That Trailer? - War For The Planet Of The Apes

Trailer season continues! But why cookie Rocket? Well it's because we have less than a week before Rogue One, but enough about that, Apes return! I'm excited about War for The Planet of the Apes because aside from getting rid of having "of the" twice in one title, there is little reason to doubt the film's potential. After having plenty of faith in the reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes and seeing even further greatness in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Fox has done well by their Apes franchise to give me plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

But how about that trailer? Well, it looks fantastic. Just from a CG standpoint, these apes look incredible. There is some seamless work here that has me concerned very little with how well the effects hold up. This is especially the case, given how strong the narrative work has been with these features. Director Matt Reves and writer Mark Bomback have developed some great ideas for this world and have been very successful at continuing the arc of Andy Serkis' Caesar.

And what is new this time around? Well, we have Woody Harrelson channeling Matthew McConaughey from Reign of Fire and some great looking settings. Seeing the apes interact in snow provides for some really excellent filmmaking, but apes on horses by the beach is also quite striking and fitting, given the references to the original film. It all seems to be adding up to a film that has what it needs to complete a great trilogy, assuming this is where things are going to conclude.

War for the Planet of the Apes arrives in theaters July 14, 2017.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.
