How About That Trailer? - Alien: Covenant
Apparently, Fox felt audiences who wanted their Christmas gift early or a creepy first night of Hannukah gift wouldn't mind it being the first trailer for Alien: Covenant. Despite my thought of their current strategy to release one photo a day until the film's release would be more worthwhile, here we have what appears to be the scariest Ridley Scott film since A Good Year.
From the setup for this film, we are clearly getting a follow-up to Prometheus, given the presence of not one, but two Michael Fassbenders. That said, it would appear Scott is taking to heart the original Alien concept on a clearer level, as this film seems to certainly be hitting a lot of the hallmarks of the original Alien, along with some other new (and disgusting) ideas, such as a back-burster.
Scott knows how this world works, so it is not surprising to see a film that looks visually great. From the brief shots of the planet these new characters visit, to the familiar spaceship settings, there is enough effort put into the design of the film that I can only hope the story matches up. While I was a bigger fan of Prometheus than many others seem to be, there is clearly room for improvement.
The problem is how issues for Prometheus generally stem from the film forcing itself to tie into the rest of the franchise. Given how this is a direct sequel that continues to build up to the original Alien, one just has to believe John Logan's screenplay is geared up to deliver on feeling like something new, despite channeling what has already been deemed a classic.
Not hurting is the cast, which also includes Katherine Waterston, Noomi Rapace, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Billy Crudup, Guy Pearce and apparently James Franco. We'll just have to wait and see how this all turns out.
Alien: Covenant arrives in theaters May 19, 2017.
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.
