Weekly Recap: X-Men: Apocalypse, Alice Through The Looking Glass & More

Image
This weekend features a pretty epic face-off, as X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking Glass are both big budget blockbusters in the making, with plenty to offer for movie goers. It is too bad they are not better movies. Why not check out The Lobster, Sing Street , or The Nice Guy s if you can instead? Home video is not fairing much better this week, but you can check out one or two of our very fun podcast releases from this past week. Plenty of good stuff to find and I've even started reviewing Preacher . Enjoy. In Theaters Now: X-Men: Apocalypse -  http://whysoblu.com/x-men- apocalypse-movie-review-2/ (Now open everywhere and ready to disappoint) Alice Through the Looking Glass -  http://whysoblu.com/alice- looking-glass-reflects- improved-installment-movie- review/ (Better than the first, which I wasn't a fan of) The Nice Guys -  http://whysoblu.com/nice-guys-movie-review/ (A killer buddy comedy that deserves a bigger audience) ...

Image
This week’s episode of Out Now with Aaron and Abe takes on a new case. The guys are joined Zaki Hasan from the Movie Film Podcast to talk The Nice Guys . Other new releases get their due as well and we still dwell a bit on what makes a movie ‘fun’. Among topics covered, we have a fun round of Know Everybody ( 5:55 ), some Out Now Quickies™ ( 9:45 ), Trailer Talk for Inferno ( 24:16 ), the main review ( 32:32 ), Out Now Feedback ( 56:18 ), and Games ( 1:16:32 ). We then wrap things up ( 1:24:45 ) and end it all with some bloopers ( 1:32:16 ), following this week’s close out song.  So now, if you’ve got an hour or so to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE

How About That Trailer? - Star Trek Beyond

Image
Months after the initial debut of the first Star Trek Beyond trailer, we now have a new look at what is coming for Capt. Kirk and his crew. The first trailer for the film put an emphasis on fun for a general audience. It made a level of sense, given the age we live in where Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars are so prevalent, but seemed to upset Trek fans. I may indifferent to the franchise, but I can tell how much more balanced this trailer feels, in an effort to win back those who want a real Star Trek experience.

Out Now Commentary: X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

Image
It is time to take a stand with an all new commentary track from Out Now with Aaron and Abe. The guys are joined by Scott Mendelson , Brandon Peters and Jim Dietz to talk X-Men: The Last Stand , the much maligned third entry in the X-Men series, which crams in a bunch of characters, a cure and the Dark Phoenix storyline all into one 100-minute film. Listen in and enjoy plenty of info regarding the film’s production, its legacy, general fun and more. Lots to talk about with this one, feel free to dig it all you want. Important Note:   This commentary may feature both juvenile uses of language and jokes that may be considered un-PC.  We of course are just trying to have a fun time… So now, if you’ve got an hour to kill…

Weekly Recap: Neighbors 2, Angry Birds, The Nice Guys & More

Image
The easy way to say it - You can see a lot of good movies this week, as long as it's not Angry Birds . Neighbors 2 and The Nice Guys prove to be really good at what they set out to do and you still have smaller films like The Lobster available to check out as well. That's the new releases. You also have The Witch on Blu-ray. And why not check out my piece on the Deadpool 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray? Plenty of good content for everyone to read, so enjoy! In Theaters Now: Angry Birds -  http://whysoblu.com/angry- birds-movie-review/ (Talented voice cast in an unfunny movie) Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising -  http://whysoblu.com/ neighbors-2-joins-ranks-great- comedy-sequels-movie-review/ (Faster, leaner and funnier than the first) The Nice Guys -  http://whysoblu.com/nice- guys-movie-review/ (A killer buddy comedy) The Lobster -  http://whysoblu.com/lobster- movie-review/ (Offbeat and weird. Weekly Recap: Money Monster, The Lobster, X-Men (Advance) & More!

Image
Money Monster is basically the film of the week, even though Civil War is still going to clean up at the box office. Too bad the film is not better. On the other hand, The Lobster finally goes into limited release and it offers a lot of offbeat fun. I also have an early review of X-Men: Apocalypse up, as the embargo was lifted way early. But there's plenty more - new Blu-ray reviews, some trailer thoughts and plenty to listen to with our Civil War podcast and our Summer Gamble. Lots of good stuff to check out, so feel free to. Enjoy! In Theaters Now: Money Monster -  http://whysoblu.com/money- monster-pretty-tame-movie- review/ (A lot of talented people involved with a forgettable film) The Lobster -  http://whysoblu.com/lobster- movie-review/ (Offbeat and weird. I dug it.) X-Men: Apocalypse (advance review) -  http://whysoblu.com/x-men- apocalypse-movie-review-2/ (Was hoping for better) Here's The Archive Of Every Review Throughout The...

How About That Trailer? - Assassin's Creed

Image
The first trailer for Assassin's Creed , starring Michael Fassbender is here and I am pretty mixed on the whole thing. On the one hand, the film looks expensive, 'cool' and faithful to the source material. Some minor changes here or there are fine, but it seems to be taking the concept and actually making it work on screen. On the other hand, this is a video game movie and I've been burned too many times to really get my hopes up.

Out Now with Aaron and Abe Episode 238: Captain America: Civil War

Image
This week’s episode of Out Now with Aaron and Abe brings a great divide. The guys are joined Tyler Smith from Battleship Pretension to talk Captain America: Civil War . Plenty of time is spent on this latest opus from Marvel, with time for other topics as well. Among topics covered, we have a fun round of Know Everybody ( 3:35 ), some Out Now Quickies™ ( 8:37 ), Trailer Talk for The Birth of a Nation ( 18:20 ), the main review ( 34:00 ), Out Now Feedback ( 1:52:55 ), and Games ( 2:00:07 ). We then wrap things up ( 2:03:00 ) and end it all with some bloopers ( 2:10:20 ), following this week’s close out song.  So now, if you’ve got an hour or so to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE

How About That Trailer? - Inferno

Image
I guess Inferno is coming. It seems like this most significant improvements they keep making in these Dan Brown adaptations is the taming of Tom Hanks ' hair. Hanks is once again back as Robert Langdon, know-it-all symbologist, who once again finds himself in some sort of nefarious plot that could end up wreaking havoc on the world. It involves Dante's "Inferno" for some reason and Felicity Jones co-stars.

Captain America: Civil War has arrived and it delivers on everything you want in a blockbuster superhero movie. Otherwise, there are plenty of smaller films ( Sing Street! ) that I've covered over the past few weeks to seek out. At home you can now find Joy , but why not check out what is in store for you this summer by tuning into this week's podcast, which lays out heavy competition. It's all here. Enjoy! ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Entertains Mightily With Its Division Of Heroes (Movie Review)

Image
Captain America: Civil War : 4 out of 5 Captain America has had a good run in my book. The First Avenger is my favorite of the earth-based Marvel origin stories thanks to the handling of the character, the ensemble cast and Joe Johnston ’s stylish retro direction.  Winter Soldier was Marvel’s espionage thriller that was so good it actually made TV’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. better by proxy. Now we have Civil War , which essentially places a mini Avengers film inside of another high stakes adventure for Steve Rogers. The results are wildly entertaining, while still making room for emotional resonance.

Out Now Bonus: 5th Annual Summer Movie Gamble

Image
This week’s episode of Out Now with Aaron and Abe is the start of something big. The guys have gotten together with some regulars and have some write-in ballots from others for the 5 th Annual Summer Movie Gamble . Guests Mark Hobin, Jose Cordova and Brandon Peter s all join to discuss their picks for what they believe will be the top ten highest domestic grossing films of the summer. This is followed by lots of reasoning of why said picks were made, along with some brief thoughts on some new releases ( Keanu , Sing Street ).  So now, if you’ve got an hour or so to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE
