How About That Trailer? - Independence Day: Resurgence

Just in time for Earth Day, Fox has released another trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence and it's a good one. I am both an unabashed fan of the original 1996 blockbuster and one who has been cautiously optimistic about this sequel that finally gotten off the ground. It is mainly because I have not seen a major motion picture sequel tackle what happens after the world is destroyed, yet still moved on. I also just tend to have faith in director Roland Emmerich, when it comes to how he delivers these kinds of films and the inherent goofiness, melodrama and big budget effects melding together.

The first trailer gave us the setup and this one dives in a little deeper. We have a setup that establishes how the world has become some sort of utopia, following the alien attack, with plenty of new developments to help protect the world from future extraterrestrial attacks. Of course, that doesn't stop the aliens from returning with even bigger weapons.

Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch and somehow Brent Spiner are all back and now joined by Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward. That certainly sounds like the kind of eclectic cast you'd expect in this sort of film and hopefully they can make up for the gaping hole left by Will Smith's absence. At least Goldblum appears to be going full Golblum, though I can't say Pullman looks to be coming out a survivor, based on what we are seeing (Judd Hirsch either).

My main concern will be whether or not a new Emmerich disaster film will be able to compete with the other films that are now also able to deliver on the same level. The first film made use of fantastic effects (practical and digital, which is why it holds up well) not seen as frequently. We are now in an era where many summer movies deliver similar levels of destruction every few weeks. Hopefully the premise will help this one stand out, but at the very least, I can only hope Golblum is not the only one who is having fun in this film.

Independence Day: Resurgence opens in theaters on June 24, 2016.
