Out Now Commentary: Army Of Darkness (1992)

Image
Here’s week 5 of the 2015 horror bonus specials, as Aaron is joined again by Brandon Peters and Jason Coleman for a special audio commentary. Sam Raimi was going to be the subject of discussion, but given the release of a new Blu-ray and the upcoming Ash Vs. The Evil Dead series, it made plenty of sense to talk over Army Of Darkness . So the guys go over Raimi and the film in full detail. There are of course plenty of tangents as well, but it is all in good horror film-related fun. So now, if you’ve got an hour to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE

Weekly Recap: Our Brand Is Crisis And More!

Image
The week of Halloween generally does not offer the greatest of new releases, which is why I only have one new review. Burnt and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse didn't exactly look great, but Our Brand Is Crisis seemed promising. Unfortunately that was not the case, despite the work from Bullock. Still, lots of new Blu-rays out this week. Additionally, I've included a number of cool links, including a look at underseen horror films. Enjoy! In Theaters This Week: Our Brand Is Crisis -  http://www.ranthollywood. com/2015/10/28/our-brand-is- crisis-is-a-political-comedy- lacking-bite/ (Sandra Bullock is good, but the film is forgettable) Here's The Archive Of Every Review Throughout The Year(s) -  http://www.thecodeiszeek. com/p/review-archive.html

Out Now with Aaron and Abe Episode 214: Steve Jobs

Image
This week’s episode of Out Now with Aaron and Abe is a look at a complicated man’s story, among other things. Aaron is joined by Alan Aguilera, Mark Hobin and Markus Robinson to discuss Steve Jobs.   Among topics covered, we have a fun round of Know Everybody ( 10:16 ), some Out Now Quickies™ ( 14:41 ), trailer talk for Star Wars and Joy ( 42:10 ) , the main review ( 51:42 ), Out Now Feedback ( 1:31:37 ), and Games ( 1:44:15 ). We then wrap things up ( 1:51:40 ) and end it all with some bloopers ( 1:59:45 ), following this week’s close out song.  So now, if you’ve got an hour or so to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE

Out Now Horror Special: Filmmaker Spotlight – James Wan, Ti West & Adam Wingard

Image
Here’s week 4 of the 2015 horror bonus specials, as Aaron is joined again by Brandon Peters, Jason Coleman and Jimmy O to discuss a trio of modern horror filmmakers. James Wan, Ti West and Adam Wingard are the subjects of discussion this time around, as they are distinct and quite interesting career-wise. All three are clearly influenced by past horror filmmakers and have found their own success in their films. There are of course plenty of tangents as well, but it is all in good horror film-related fun. Enjoy and stay tuned for more! Weekly Recap: Jem and the Holograms, Paranormal Activity, Steve Jobs & More!

Image
This week finally has Steve Jobs spreading wide, but you also have the option to see the crazy things they did to Jem and the Holograms . Of course, if you're looking for horror, check out the latest Paranormal Activity , which is good for a scare. By the way, the third biggest movie ever is now on Blu-ray ( Jurassic World) , and there are plenty of Jurassic World and Back to the Future links I have assembled as well, considering the nostalgia involved with both. Enjoy! In Theaters This Week: Jem And The Holograms -  http://www.ranthollywood. com/2015/10/23/jem-and-the- holograms-is-outrageously- misguided/ (Truly, truly, truly bad) Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension -  http://www.ranthollywood.com/2015/10/23/paranormal-activity-the-ghost-dimension-is-only-for-diehard-fans/ (It's good enough for fans) Steve Jobs -  http://www.ranthollywood. com/2015/10/08/steve-jobs-is- spellbinding-and-other- biopics-could-learn-from-it/ (One of the be...

Out Now with Aaron and Abe Episode 213: Bridge Of Spies And Crimson Peak

Image
This week’s episode of Out Now with Aaron and Abe is a double episode covering films from two much loved filmmakers. Aaron and Abe are joined by guests Zaki Hasan and Michael Lee to talk Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies and Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak.   Among topics covered, we have a fun round of Know Everybody ( 6:07 ), some Out Now Quickies™ ( 10:50 ), Trailer talk for Trumbo ( 18:18 ) , the main reviews ( 24:28 ) and ( 45:40 ), Out Now Feedback ( 70:41 ), and Games ( 88:44 ). We then wrap things up ( 96:52 ) and end it all with some bloopers ( 107:29 ), following this week’s close out song.  So now, if you’ve got an hour or so to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE

Out Now Horror Special: Filmmaker Spotlight – Guillermo del Toro

Image
Here’s week 3 of the 2015 horror bonus specials, as Aaron is joined again by Brandon Peters, Jason Coleman and Jimmy O to discuss Guillermo del Toro. Abe even manages to join in this time around to help go over the fan-favorite filmmaker’s career thus far. Plenty of discussion is given in regards to what Del Toro has brought to the film world in both his big and personal projects. There are of course plenty of tangents as well, but it is all in good horror film-related fun. Enjoy and stay tuned for more! Weekly Recap: Bridge of Spies, Crimson Peak, Room & More!

Image
This week we have new films from Steven Spielberg and Guillermo del Toro, so clearly its film geek heaven. It's just a shame Crimson Peak  is not the next great film from Del Toro. Still solid, but not amazing. Bridge of Spies , on the other hand, is just a fine drama all around. Then you have smaller films like Room  and Beast of No Nation, which offer plenty as far as compelling narratives. Enjoy my reviews for all, in addition to our podcasts from this week and all the other fun links. There are some good ones! In Theaters This Week: Bridge of Spies -  http://www.ranthollywood. com/2015/10/13/bridge-of- spies-has-steven-spielberg- proving-hes-still-one-of-the- greats/ (Spielberg is the master) Crimson Peak -  http://www.thecodeiszeek. com/2015/10/crimson-peak-sets- sights-on-style-over.html (Lots of flashy style in an okay story) Goosbumps -  http://www.ranthollywood.com/2015/10/16/goosebumps-is-a-successful-spooky-adventure-for-its-in...

Crimson Peak Sets Sights On Style Over Substance and Succeeds Well Enough

Image
Crimson Peak : 3 1/2 out of 5 It is frustrating to see a film as magnificently beautiful and well-crafted as Guillermo del Toro's   Crimson Peak  and sadly know that it does not quite emerge as another astounding success. The man has gone back and forth between deeply personal projects ( Pan's Labyrinth ) and blockbuster silliness ( Pacific Rim ) and has even managed to combine the two at times ( Hellboy II ). Here there seems to be an attempt to once again approach that combination, but while audiences may be starved for a juicy ghost story in October, Del Toro apparently set his sights elsewhere and neglected to fine-tune a script that is up to par with what he is capable of.

Out Now with Aaron and Abe Episode 212: Pan

Image
This week’s episode of Out Now with Aaron and Abe is a cult cinema takeover. Aaron and Abe are joined by Ana Bosch to discuss Pan.   Among topics covered, we have a fun round of Know Everybody ( 8:10 ), some Out Now Quickies™ ( 15:25 ), Trailer talk for Hail, Caesar! ( 26:27 ) , the main review ( 29:50 ), Out Now Feedback ( 1:05:56 ), and Games ( 1:16:47 ). We then wrap things up ( 1:25:34 ) and end it all with some bloopers ( 1:36:18 ), following this week’s close out song.  So now, if you’ve got an hour or so to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE

Out Now Horror Special: Filmmaker Spotlight – John Carpenter

Image
Here’s week 2 of the 2015 horror bonus specials, as Aaron is joined again by Brandon Peters, Jason Coleman and Jimmy O to John Carpenter. He may essentially be retired at this point, but the guys are here to go over his legacy and hammer out thoughts of his work overall. Carpenter’s work throughout the 80s, in particular, is given plenty of thought, as the man truly made quite the impact, while holding on to his signature style. There are of course plenty of tangents as well, but it is all in good horror film-related fun. Enjoy and stay tuned for more! So now, if you’ve got an hour to kill…

Weekly Recap: Pan, Steve Jobs & More!

Image
Pan arrives in theaters this week, but it is sadly just as bad as Hook . For those of you that love Hook, I am sorry, but you can try and determine if this film is worth it at all. Meanwhile, I did get a chance to see Steve Jobs , which is absolutely terrific. Sadly, folks not in LA or New York will have to wait a couple weeks. Meanwhile, I have a number of reviews for new DVD/Blu-ray releases and also have a bunch of fun links for work I put out this week. Enjoy the fantasy films list in particular. In Theaters This Week: Pan -  http://www.thecodeiszeek. com/2015/10/pan-does-not-soar- very-high-at-all.html (A big ol' mess) Steve Jobs -  http://www.ranthollywood. com/2015/10/08/steve-jobs-is- spellbinding-and-other- biopics-could-learn-from-it/ (One of the best of the year, spreads wider in two weeks) The Walk -  http://www.ranthollywood. com/2015/10/01/the-walk-has- enough-visual-grandeur-to- maintain-its-balance/ (The documentary was better, but ...

‘Pan’ Does Not Soar Very High At All

Image
Pan : 2 out of 5 Pan is another big-budget, ambitious mess in a year where we could really use one that actually turned out well. Instead, we have a film that looks like the worse aspects of Hollywood coming together in a film filled with potential to be greater. Rather than explore an interesting concept to give purpose to a film seeking to ruin the mystique behind Peter Pan’s origins, we have a traditional “chosen one” storyline, riddled with poor choices, rushed plotting and weak characters. This is to say nothing of the extensive CGI, but it at least fits with the handsome production values and zany Hugh Jackman performance.

Out Now with Aaron and Abe Episode 211: The Martian

Image
This week, Aaron and Abe are joined Ethan Anderton and Maxwell Haddad to discuss The Martian .  Among topics covered, we have a fun round of Know Everybody (4:15), some Out Now Quickies TM (9:24), Trailer talk for The Jungle Book (16:54), the main review (24:40), Out Now Feedback (54:33), and Games (71:14). We then wrap things up (77:04) and end it all with some bloopers (95:38), following this week's close out song.  So now, if you've got an hour or so to kill... Out Now Horror Special: Filmmaker Spotlight – Wes Craven

Image
We’re baaaack! Last year Aaron was joined by Brandon Peters, Jason Coleman and Jimmy O to talk horror film throughout the decades. It was a fun series of episode and they have now gotten together for another fun bonus series to celebrate the month of October. This time the guys are diving into specific horror filmmakers, starting with the legendary Wes Craven. He may have sadly passed away, but the guys are here to go over his legacy and hammer out thoughts of his work overall. There are of course plenty of tangents as well, but it is all in good horror film-related fun. Enjoy and stay tuned for more! The Martian finally hits theaters this week and it's great. But that's not all. Sicario is now playing everywhere and The Walk is playing in the only place you need to see it - on IMAX 3D. You can also enjoy the many new Blu-ray/DVD releases this week, which I have every review for. I've also included a number of fun links that range from Mel Brooks to Star Wars. It's a fun collection of stuff this week, so enjoy!
