Weekly Recap: San Andreas, Aloha, and More!

Image
This week seemingly had a couple disaster movies. One actually is a disaster movie, while the other is something of an editing disaster. The Rock is back in action, though there is little to recommend beyond the wild display of destruction. Meanwhile, Cameron Crowe journeys to Hawaii and comes back with a film that reeks of post-production tinkering. Basically, Max Max is still an option, so why not take it? Other than that, enjoy some of these articles and lists I have put together, as well as an all new podcast. In Theaters This Week: San Andreas -  http://www.ranthollywood.com/2015/05/28/san-andreas-will-shake-you-into-enjoying-its-silliness/ (The Rock, Earthquakes and that's about it) Aloha -  http://www.ranthollywood.com/2015/05/28/aloha-is-a-spastic-mess/ (Cameron Crowe misses the mark here) Still out and worth seeing: Mad Max, Ex Machina, Avengers, Far From The Madding Crowd

Weekly Recap: Tomorrowland, Poltergeist, and More!

Image
This week presented one of my most anticipated films of the summer, Tomorrowland , which may or may not have lived up to its potential. We also got a Poltergeist remake starring a non-dancing Sam Rockwell. Fortunately there were lots of other things happened, which I tried to lay out in this week's recap. In Theaters This Week: Tomorrowland -  http://www.thecodeiszeek.com/2015/05/go-see-tomorrowland-todayor-wheneverits.html (Ambitious and fun, but still flawed) Poltergeist -  http://whysoblu.com/theyve-conjured-up-a-stale-remake-of-poltergeist-movie-review/ (You asked for a remake of Poltergeist...right?) Mad Max: Fury Road -  http://www.ranthollywood. com/2015/05/11/film-review- mad-max-fury-road-is-a-car- chase-action-extravaganza/ (Hurry up and see this already)

Go See 'Tomorrowland' Today…Or Whenever...It's Okay (Movie Review)

Image
Tomorrowland : 3 ½ out of 5 If Brad Bird is working on a new film, that’s really all I need to get excited. Going into production on a film called  Tomorrowland  was interesting enough and then he brought along George Clooney to add a bit more prestige to the project. Not knowing what to expect, there was a sense that audiences would get something of a retro sci-fi adventure film, based on the title alone.  This would not be a first for Disney or Bird, as  The Rocketeer  and  The Iron Giant , let alone the  The Incredibles,  all rely on a level of nostalgia to go along with the thrills made possible by the era in which these films were made. This is why it is unfortunate  Tomorrowland  is not another Bird film that will go on to be a highlight in its genre. The film has a level of ambition and some neat sights, but it is held up by a narrative that is somehow overly complicated, yet lacking.
